History

The Red Deer& District Kennel Club started in 1963 and was affiliated with the Cat Club for a year, then went on their own as the Cat Club folded.

The first meeting was held in the old Carlings Brewery building.  The President at that time was Edwina Buchan and Isabel Duncan was Secretary Treasurer.  After that, meetings were held in the basement of our Obedience Director, Henry Muehler's home.

Our first and second All Breed show were held in the basement of the Capri Hotel in November 1966 with an entry of around 300 dogs. Entry fees were $5.00 and catalogues were $1.00.   Judges were Joe Flemming and Tom Quilley.

The next show was Obedience only June 10 & 11, 1967, held at Varsity Hall in Sylvan Lake, (no longer in existence).  Entries were Novice A 20, Novice B 7, Open A 5, Open B 1 and Utility 2.  Entry fees were $2.50 and the catalogue was 50 cents. Judges were Evelyn Kenny, Karen Zimmerman and Walter Frost.

Of interest, Edwina Buchan was the head nurse at the Red Deer Health Unit and Isabel Duncan was a pharmacist at the then Red Deer, Deer Home now known as Michener Centre.
